Bio:

Sammy was an Outlaw before there was the World of Outlaws. Following father Sam on the sticky gumbo at Riverside in West Memphis, Arkansas at the age of 15 in 1971, he quickly ascended to legendary status in the region. He would hit the road at a young age, and start to make a name for himself. He was out there for the initial WoO season, finishing 9th in the final standings.

He took the WoO championship in 1982 and 1983, the year he won the Knoxville Nationals. He quickly became part of the "Big Three", a trio that also included Steve Kinser and Doug Wolfgang.

Through the years, Sammy has driven in a number of machines including Indy cars and stock cars. Just last January, he claimed his fifth midget Chili Bowl Race of Champions in Tulsa.

Seldom committing to the whole WoO series through the years, Sammy would often chase the money. He did return in the mid-'90's and took his third championship in 1997, on the strength of 19 wins.

In addition to his Nationals win, Sammy has won the King's Royal at Eldora (OH) twice, three Silver Cups at Lernerville (PA), two Western Worlds at Manzanita (AZ), the Gold Cup at Chico (CA), the Williams Grove (PA) National Open and many more.

Sammy has had an interesting history racing at Knoxville. He is second only to Steve Kinser in top ten finishes (19) in the Nationals, is second in Nationals finale appearances (27), and has competed in more Knoxville Nationals than any other driver (34). Sammy is sixth all-time on the Knoxville wins list with 44.
