URC Continues To Support Brodix ToC at Knoxville

Sunday, June 19, 2005
It all started with a proposal from the United Racing Club’s Bob Miller to Knoxville Raceway’s Ralph “Cappy” Capitani in late 1996. Miller was looking to take the historic sprint car club to the legendary half-mile dirt track in Iowa for URC’s 50th anniversary season in 1997. When all was said and done, the Empire Super Sprints (ESS) sanction was added to the mix and the Tournament of Champions (ToC) invitational 360-cubic-inch sprint car race was born, with URC’s Greg Coverdale of Delaware winning the inaugural McCroskey Chevrolet-sponsored event. Today, URC hot-shoes Dave Ely of Pennsylvania and Curt Michael of Delaware have entered the 7th Brodix Tournament of Champions, set for Sunday, August 7, at Knoxville Raceway.

However, the 2005 edition of the Brodix ToC has grown greatly, with twenty-one sanctions now taking that weekend off and allowing their top teams to compete in Knoxville’s big ‘All Star Break’ weekend. The 2005 Cox Design and Metal Fabrication Southern Iowa SprintWeek will open with four straight nights of 360 sprint car racing at Knoxville Raceway. The Thursday-Friday, August 4-5, Knoxville 360 Nationals, sponsored by John Deere and NAPA, will pay $10,000 to win and be shown on the Speed Channel. The Saturday, August 6, Casey’s General Stores Night will pay $2,500 to win the 360 feature, and will also include a full program of 410 c.i. sprint cars. Finally, the Sunday, August 7, Brodix Tournament of Champions invitational will offer a 30-car, 30-lap, $5,000-to-win feature race with the best-of-the-best from the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Defending Brodix ToC champion Loren Langerud of North Dakota has also filed his official entry for this year’s event, again representing the WISSOTA Promoters Association.

Ely will wheel Gene Franckowiak’s Shuttleworth Asphalt Sealing/Minich’s Jewelers/Hamilton Motorsports-sponsored, Ott-powered F-5 sprinter, while Michael will pilot Kathy Palladino’s BK Trucking/CnB Mushroom Farms/Dick Feeser Realtor-sponsored, Ott-powered J&J sprinter. The United Racing Club, lead by John Zimmerman and Bob Miller, will receive a maximum of fifteen invitations to the Brodix Tournament of Champions.
