Competition Explodes Heading Into Vermeer Night!!!

Monday, June 27, 2005
by Bill Wright - The points races couldn’t be hotter heading into Vermeer night on Saturday, July 2! The excitement will be at a fever pitch for this holiday weekend in both the 410 and 360 classes. Admission is $10 for adults and $3 for the kids. You can’t beat what we have in store for your entertainment dollar.

Our 410 points leader, Kerry Madsen, has spent his week racing with the All Stars in Ohio Speedweek and he will be back to battle Wayne Johnson, who ran well with the World of Outlaws Tuesday night at Huset’s Speedway (11th). Third place runner, Ricky Logan, wasn’t idle either, as he spent the week in Ohio, steering Pete Grove’s 70 car. He will return in Mike VanderEcken’s 10 for Saturday’s events. Just two weeks ago, Logan won his first feature of the year, and 200 points separates the lead trio in the 410 class.

Brian Brown will be ready as well after a fine run two weeks ago vaulted him into fourth in the points race. Skip Jackson still lurks in fifth, while Billy Alley, Justin Henderson, Don Droud Jr., Matt Moro and Calvin Landis round out the top ten.

Henderson was the top local finisher last Friday here with the World of Outlaws bringing a ninth place finish home. He was the only regular to earn more than the 100 track points allotted for World of Outlaw competition. His five additional points have pulled him into a tie for sixth with Alley, who holds down that spot despite missing two early shows this year.

Lynton Jeffrey turned in a nice run in 410 weekly action last Sunday night at Huset’s. He charged from 21st to 4th. Mark Dobmeier won the race, followed by Dusty Zomer and Johnson. Henderson finished fifth, followed by Chad Meyer. Colin Northway finished 12th, Jake Peters was 17th, Terry McCarl was 18th and Mike Moore was scored 20th.

Peters continues to stalk Larry Ball Jr. in the 360 class. A lead that would be deemed “comfortable”, for Ball a few weeks ago, has now shrunk to 18 points. John Kearney’s second place run a week ago has put him third in the standings, 62 points behind the leader, while Johnny Anderson and Brett Mather round out the top five. John Schulz, Josh Higday, David Hall, Joe Beaver and Zomer round out the top ten in 360 points.

Higday ran a great race a week ago to grab his first triumph of 2005. He held on over a strong running Kearney, and a charging Peters to take home the trophy. It was a rousing celebration after having his car and trailer stolen and then recovered, a few weeks ago. Josh also celebrated a birthday this week.

Don’t miss the action this Saturday night at Knoxville!!!

Web Updates

Complete 1998 Results and Stories can now be found in our “Previous Results” section under “Results”. Find point standings, feature wins, laps led, what they drove and where they started and finished in every single event held at Knoxville in 1998.

It was a year the locals didn’t want to see the trailers of Gary Wright or Jac Haudenschild pull into the infield. The two took a lot of cash from the Knoxville Raceway in 1998. Wright scored two feature wins both in the 410 and 360 classes. When the All Stars visited in May, it was Wright who took home the checkered flag over a star-studded field. He also won the 360 Nationals in dominating fashion, as well as the 410 race prior to the Nationals in August. Haudenschild took five WoO feature wins, but it was Danny Lasoski who took the big prize. The “Dude” scored his first career Nationals victory after a lifetime of trying. David Hesmer dominated the 360 class scoring six feature wins, while Skip Jackson did the same with the “big iron”, scoring seven checkered flags. Don Droud Jr. scored an emotional 410 win in the “Danny Young Memorial”. Read about all of it now in our “Previous Results” section.

Pre-entries continue to roll in as deadlines approach. Check out who is signed up in our “Events” section on the home page. The 360 Nationals are boasting 51 entries as of this writing, as the July 1 deadline approaches. The 45th Annual Knoxville Nationals have 25 entries as an early-entry fee of July 15th approaches. The Tournament of Champions boasts 44 entries from 14 different sanctions as a July 26 deadline approaches. Expect pre-entries to explode over the 4th of July weekend for all these events!!! Until next time…
