Update on Skip Jackson and Saturday’s Auction!
(Bill W) June 9, 2011 – Items are streaming in for the auction to benefit sprint car driver and champion, Skip Jackson. The auction will be held this Saturday, June 11, at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum at Noon. When talking with Skip, he wanted to clear the air on a few issues and give an update on his health.
Skip explained where he is right now. “I know that it was announced that the cancer was Stage III, but I really don’t know what stage it’s in. I will be going through surgery later this month to take the prostate and the lymph nodes around it out. There was quite a bit of cancer in the prostate. There may be radiation following, but hopefully not. We need to wait and find out what they see when they get in there.”
The fact that the cancer was detected was fortunate. “I’m not the youngest to have gone through this, but 42 is definitely young,” says Skip. “I’m very lucky that one day I was driving home from work and it was raining. I called Lori to tell her that soccer practice was off, and she made a doctor’s appointment for me. That was the biggest blessing I’ve had. The doctors took a blood test for the sake of it, and it went from there. It was a miracle, because normally they don’t check that stuff for someone my age. To have it caught was a blessing. If I would have waited to get checked until I was 50 on this, I wouldn’t be around.”
Skip’s surgery will occur towards the end of the month in Arizona. “I’ll be going back to The Cancer Treatment Center in Phoenix on June 24,” he says. “The doctor in Des Moines, who is excellent. Bruce and Debi Cox recommended The Cancer Treatment Center. It is a great facility. I’ll probably be there for a couple of weeks. My mom is coming over to help with the kids, and Lori will come down initially. We work in unison with the kids, because they are the most important thing to both of us.”
The kindness surrounding the auction, and even more the thoughts and prayers that people have for Skip are important to him. “I’m very grateful for what everyone is doing,” he says. “In a lot of ways, it is overwhelming. For everyone that is involved, thank you! As far as cancer patients, I’m probably the luckiest one in the whole world. I’m very grateful for all the help that people are giving me. I’m most grateful for all the prayers that people are giving me.”
Donations for the auction can still be made to Bob Baker at the Hall of Fame.
