Drop the Green!!! It's Twin Features Night!!!

Saturday, July 9, 2005
by Bill Wright - This Saturday night, it’s Wells Fargo Twin Features Night, and for $12 ($3 for kids) you can see four sprint car features in one night here at Knoxville! The finishes of the first features are inverted. We put the fast guys at the back and turn 'em loose! Don’t miss it! We’re also expecting some visiting competitors, hoping to turn a few laps before the big shows in August.

Some would argue that Wells Fargo Twin Features Night is the most exciting event of the season, and who can argue with that? Last year’s event saw a point change on the 410 side. Travis Cram led the standings going into the night, but a DNF and a DNS left him on the outside looking in, when the night was over. Terry McCarl took the first feature in last year’s event, with Brent Antill taking the nightcap. Last week’s 410 feature winner, Wayne Johnson finished as a runner-up in both 2004 events. In the second, he charged from a 16th starting spot. The 2005 410 point leader hopes to improve on those finishes this season, and add to his 100 point lead over Kerry Madsen, who dropped out of last week’s A main.

Ricky Logan runs third in the current 410 standings, 180 points behind the leader, closely followed by Brian Brown and Skip Jackson. Billy Alley who led much of last week’s event, Justin Henderson, Don Droud Jr., Matt Moro and Calvin Landis and Tim St. Arnold (tied) round out the top ten. Alley was the last to capture both of his respective features on twin features night, when he bested the 360 field in 2003!

Johnson and Alley also picked up wins at the Huset’s Speedway last Sunday evening and are arguably the hottest drivers on the track right now. Brown is also running well. He scored 360 wins with the ESTS at McCool Junction in Nebraska, and bested Alley in ASCS Midwest Region action at Park Jefferson in South Dakota last Monday. Jesse Giannetto scored a popular win with the Sprint Invaders at Columbus Junction, Iowa last Sunday, as well.

John Kearney and Jake Peters (from 11th) won last year’s 360 portion of twin features night, and they will both be in action this Saturday as they hope to lead the points race coming out of the weekend. Peters, the defending 360 champion, passed Larry Ball Jr. with his victory last Saturday night, and now has a 40 point lead over the pilot of the 5J. Johnny Anderson sits in third, 71 points back, Kearney sits in fourth and Brett Mather rounds out the top five. John Schulz, Josh Higday, David Hall, Joe Beaver and Dusty Zomer complete the top ten in the 360 standings. Only 90 points separate Mather in fifth, from Beaver in ninth, so there will be a whole lot of shaking going on in the standings come Saturday night!!!

Just making the show is of the utmost importance, with full points being shelled out for both events. The second feature is inverted, meaning the winner of the first, will start towards the tail of the second, so plenty of passing is a given. This kind of action is unique to sprint car racing, don’t miss it this Saturday night!
