Donny Schatz & Sammy Swindell to Compete in Saturday’s 2014 SPEED SPORT Knoxville World Challenge Qualifier at New Zealand’s WXC Speedway

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (November 21, 2013) — Seven-time and defending Knoxville Nationals champion Donny Schatz, of North Dakota, and 1983 Knoxville Nationals champion and National Sprint Car Hall of Fame inductee Sammy Swindell, of Tennessee, are scheduled to compete in Saturday’s 2014 SPEED SPORT Knoxville World Challenge qualifier at the WXC Speedway in the Western Springs district of Auckland, New Zealand.

“Wow. My hat is off to Western Springs promoter Greg Mosen for landing two of the top sprint car drivers in the world for his World Sprintcars show this weekend,” said Knoxville Raceway General Manager Brian Stickel. “Their participation in this one international event will qualify both past Nationals champions for the Friday, Aug. 8, 2014 SPEED SPORT World Challenge during the Knoxville Nationals. That 21st annual race will provide the winner with $10,000 and a possible golden ticket into the 54th FVP Knoxville Nationals championship feature on Saturday, Aug. 9. Obviously, both Donny and Sammy, who finished one-two in the 2012 Knoxville World Challenge, respectively, know the significance of qualifying for the SPEED SPORT-sponsored international invitational.”

The Robertson Holden International Speedway in Palmerston North, New Zealand, will host the second qualifier on Saturday, Dec. 14. The final international qualifier will take place January 24-26 when Premier Speedway in Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia, hosts the 42nd annual Lucas Oil Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic, which will pay $30,000 to the winner. Combined with twin $10,000-to-win Australia/America Challenge Cup preliminary night mains, both presented by Oval Express, a large contingent of American racers are expected to converge on this popular seaside city for Australia’s version of the Knoxville Nationals.
