Billy Alley is officially "Mr. Sprint Car" for 2005

Saturday, August 13, 2005
Nebraska’s Billy Alley of Lincoln is officially “Mr. Sprint Car” for 2005 after clinching the fourth annual Cox Design & Metal Fabrication Southern Iowa SprintWeek point title Friday night during the Knoxville Nationals presented by the Midwest Ford Dealers. The Knoxville 360 Nationals champion, who is sponsored by “Speedy” Bill Smith’s Speedway Motors, has 269 points and is starting tonight’s Knoxville 410 Nationals on the front row. Alley, who will earn $2,500 tonight for claiming the unique iron-man title, cannot be overtaken by current runner-up Jesse Hockett (217 points) in the ten-day point standings between the Oskaloosa and Knoxville dirt tracks. Tonight’s championship feature pays 50 SprintWeek points maximum to win and Sunday night’s rescheduled non-qualifiers feature does not pay points, thus clinching the title for young Alley.

Second place in the Cox Fabrication Southern Iowa SprintWeek is worth $1,000, and it will be contested between the next fourteen drivers in the standings. A total of 247 different drivers have scored points heading into tonight’s Knoxville Nationals finale at the Knoxville Raceway. Past Southern Iowa SprintWeek “Mr. Sprint Car” titlists are Ricky Logan (2002) and Shane Stewart (2003, ’04).
