McCarl Pockets $15K, Four Knoxville Regulars in East Bay Finale
Sunday, February 5, 2006
by Bill Wright - Six-time Knoxville track champ Terry McCarl drove his #24 by defending All Star champion and new World of Outlaws competitor, Chad Kemenah, on lap 33 of 40 in the finale of 410 events at East Bay Raceway Park near Tampa, Florida on Saturday night. The win paid the Altoona, Iowa native $10,000. An additional $5,000 was awarded to McCarl as he had also topped the Ronald Laney "King of 360s" event one week ago. That win also paid him $10,000. McCarl has racked up four out of the five winged events run at East Bay thus far.

Four Knoxville regulars were in competition, and all four made the feature event. Amongst the 40 cars in attendance were 410 regular Wayne Johnson, 2005 Knoxville 410 Rookie of the Year and Rookie of the Nationals, Kaley Gharst, 410 regular Jesse Giannetto (car pictured) and 2005 Knoxville 410 track champion, Kerry Madsen.

Johnson was still subbing for Natalie Sather in her family's #94s, wrenched by National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Kenny Woodruff. Johnson timed 22nd quick, won his heat and surged from 18th to 13th in the main event.

Gharst was in his first night of competition on the young season in the family #44G. After timing 28th quick, he finished sixth in his heat before finishing fifth in the B. The finish was enough to get him in the A, as Tony Bruce Jr. was unable to start the event. Gharst charged from 24th to 17th in the race.

Giannetto was 26th quick before smoking to a seventh place finish in his heat. He was able to gain a transfer to the main event by finishing fourth in the B. He came home 21st.

Madsen timed in 19th quick, finished fifth in his heat and was scored 23rd in the main event after retiring early.

In other news, Jason Martin, a 2006 World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year candidate, injured some vertebrae in a scary crash on Thursday night. Knoxville 410 regular, Brian Brown will fill his seat on the World of Outlaws tour for several weeks until Martin is 100% healthy.

Events will move east to Volusia, Florida this week as the All Stars and the World of Outlaws start their seasons.
