Johnny Anderson team wins 1st Annual Knoxville Raceway Bowling Challenge

by Kathy Bell - The 1st Annual Knoxville Raceway Bowling Challenge, held Sunday, May 7 at the Fairlane Bowl in Knoxville, was won by 360 racer, Johnny Anderson's (#7A) team. Anderson and his team of Mike Palmer, Bubba Vitiritto, Ryan Charter and Tyler Ballard, surpassed the runner-up team of 360 driver, Frankie Heimbaugh (#04) by a mere seven pins.

Anderson's team total after three games was, 2862 followed by Heimbaugh's team tally of 2856. Wayne Johnson's (#10- 410 division) bowling team placed third with 2704. Rounding out the top five were the teams of Tim St. Arnold (#7W- 410), 2579 and Josh Higday (#24- 360), 2285, respectively.

The bowling team of Knoxville's Larry Ball Jr. (#5J- 410) placed sixth with 2206 followed by Matt Moro's (#47-410) team score of 2056. Filling out the top ten were Mike Moore's team (#69-410) with a score of 2020, driver Dustin Selvage's team (#7-360), 1804 and Stacey Alexander's team (#2TX- 360) with a 1569.

The 360 drivers led the challenge at the end of game one. Having the high score in round one was, Tyler Ballard (Des Moines), with a 245, from Johnny Anderson's team. The low score, a 58, went to a bowler on Matt Moro's team. Frankie Heimbaugh's team had the highest combined score in round one with a
980. The 410 drivers made a comeback in round two with a higher combined score. Anderson's team had the highest team total with a 972. The highest score in game two was earned by Don Van Mersbergen (Oskaloosa) with a 235. Van Mersbergen was a member of Matt Moro's team. Low score for the round, a 47, went to a bowler on Dustin Selvage's team.

Heimbaugh's team came back in round three with the high team score of 997. The 360 teams of Heimbaugh, Anderson, Alexander, Higday and Selvage had a higher three-game total giving them bragging rights as Challenge winners. Having the high score in game three and over-all high score of the Challenge was Chris Mason (Knoxville), with a 248. Mason was a member of Wayne Johnson's team. The low score of round three, a 59, went to a bowler on Dustin Selvage's team and receiving a trophy for lowest score of the day was Doug Snodgrass (Carlisle), with the 47 he earned in game two.

Along with getting together for a day full of fun the Knoxville Raceway weekly drivers also raised money for the KRCO, Knoxville Raceway Charitable Organization. Between the $600 entry fee paid by the bowlers and $1,336.75 raised by a silent auction of racing memorabilia, a total of $1,936.75 was
raised.

Event organizers, Louie and Susan Plude and Knoxville Fairlane Bowl owners, Brad and Pam Palmer were happy with the driver turnout for the 1st Annual Knoxville Raceway Bowling Challenge. They look forward to having an even bigger and better event next year.
