12 cents a car!

Wednesday, May 4, 2005
by Bill Wright - It’s back to regular season racing at Knoxville this weekend after some great racing last weekend with the World of Outlaws. Two of the masters of the famous half-mile came out on top last weekend. Danny Lasoski scored his 85th career win on Friday, and Steve Kinser visited victory lane for the 58th time at Knoxville. They sit first and third, respectively, in career Knoxville triumphs. Their duel through traffic on Saturday night was one for the ages. Saturday saw 99 sprinters in the pits, with the 360 class also in action. Larry Ball Jr. prevailed in the 360 class, it was his second career feature win at Knoxville.

Wayne Johnson holds a 65 point lead over Aussie, Skip Jackson in the 410 point standings. Though all Knoxville competitors are given 100 points for racing with the WoO, if you earn more than 100, you get to keep your points. Johnson did just that, and extended the lead he had on Jackson in the process. Brian Brown sits third in the standings, ahead of Kerry Madsen and Don Droud Jr., who moved slightly ahead of Chad Meyer after a strong weekend with the WoO. Eight Knoxville regulars qualified for the feature last Friday night, with Johnson being the highest finisher of the weekend with a seventh. Six regulars raced in Saturday’s finale. 43 360s graced the pit area on Saturday night.

Saturday night is CARQUEST/Lion’s Club night and admission is $10 for adults and $3 for kids. With 70-80 sprints expected in the pit area, nowhere else can you get a better value of around $0.12 per sprint car! With the IRA (Interstate Racing Association) having an off weekend, look for possible visits from a few drivers from the north in the 410 class.

John Kearney continues his march on top of the 360 points. Ball moved to second with his win. Johnny Anderson, a steady David Hall and 2004 Rookie of the Year, Dusty Zomer, round out the top five in points thus far. Last year’s champ, Jake Peters, will look to get back on track after a crash on opening night. He sits tenth in points. Multi-time Knoxville champ and all-time feature winner, David Hesmer, can’t catch a break and sits 15th in the current standings.

If you don’t see your favorite driver in the point standings in our “Drivers” section, it means that don’t qualify (at least yet) for racing 75% of the races. To qualify for year end point standings and awards, you need to compete in 75% of the events. You can check their points, however. Just click on their name through results, news articles, or pre-entries, and you will come to their bio page. It will display how many points they have accumulated thus far.

Web update

If you couldn’t make it out to the raceway, we hope many of you enjoyed our maiden internet/radio broadcast last week. www.americandirtnetwork.com joined forces with local radio station KRNA/KRLS to be the official broadcast network of Knoxville Raceway. Rod Pattison, yours truly, and KRLS’s Darick Cardwell have teamed up to bring you the racing action, each and every night at Knoxville Raceway! We want you at the raceway, but if you can’t make it, please tune in. Send us an e-mail at editor@knoxvilleraceway.com to tell us what you think and where you’re listening from.
