by Bruce Neimeth – This weekends 6th Annual Pepsi/Mt. Dew USAC Knoxville Midget Nationals, presented by Iowa Telecom, should be a ”barnburner” with over 50 drivers representing the top six national and regional Midget Series. The pre-entries alone represent over 400 Midget Features as well as numerous event and series championships from the Chili Bowl to the Belleville Nationals.

This will be a true national event with drivers and teams from Florida to Washington, California to Pennsylvania, Arizona to North Carolina and Oklahoma to Wisconsin. The key is the event is a co-sanction of the American Race Drivers Club (ARDC), Badger Midget Auto Racing Series (BMARA), O’Reilly Poweri Racing (Poweri), Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association (RMMRA), Southern Midget Racing Series (SMRS) and United States Auto Club (USAC).

According to Ralph Capitani, Director of Racing for Knoxville Raceway, “This is the first time in my 38 years of racing that I can remember this many different series’ working together to develop a common set of rules for a single event. This makes it easier for car owners to race without lots of extra expense for just a single event”. He went on to say, “Four of the six series are making the Knoxville Midget Nationals a points race, and the other two have not scheduled any events during that week”.

Pre-entries include Bobby East and Darren Hagen, #1 & #2 in USAC points, Mike Hess and Brad Loyet, #1 & #2 in Poweri points, Brad Kuhn and Jerry Coons, Jr., #1 & #2 in Badger points and Tracy Readinger, #1 in ARDC point. Mike Hess, Jerry Coons, Jr. and Chad DeSelle are Knoxville Midget Nationals Champions, with Scott Hatton a Chili Bowl Champion.

Friday, June 22nd will feature a complete Midget Car race program, including crowning the King Doodlebug Champion, along with the “360” winged Sprint Car Knoxville Championship Cup Series event. Saturday, June 23rd will again include a complete Midget Car race program along with the “410” winged Sprint Car Knoxville Championship Cup Series event.
