Fans Find Winter-time Relief for Racing Crave

With the deep freeze we’ve all been in this winter, it’s easy to dream about those dog days of summer we all love so much! Quick fixes of our racing addictions are few and far between as well in the middle of sub zero temperatures. But as racing fans go (young and old), determination is always a key ingredient in their attitude.

So what are racing fans doing to curb their appetite this winter?

Well, thanks to the internet, sites like Hoseheads and visits to our favorite sanctions’ websites, we can get a quick fix. Nightly browsing of the site turns up almost the same exact information as the previous night, but still we go back- just for the chance that some new and exciting breaking news will be posted!

But after a few months, even this doesn’t seem to quench the thirst for a good old race! So we then break out the race tapes and DVD’s! The thrills and spills versions are always refreshing mid-winter. As for this writer however, I don’t know how many more times I can hear Tony Bokhoven’s voice yelling at me from my TV though! And it’s always the same thing, due to the fact that my five-year-old son has a favorite race tape to watch (where his uncle Travis and his dad win their races on the same night). I think I may have the whole race memorized and could almost commentate it myself, and with my eyes closed at that!

And then there are some of us who are lucky enough to have the super-mega-duper cable/dish package that allows us to get the Speed Channel! Now those are some fun races to watch in the dead of winter! Not exactly the same as being pelted by flying clay at Knoxville Raceway, but a fix nonetheless.

Finally January arrives when we can look forward to real racing action! The Chili Bowl! Some of us pile in our vehicles and road trip it down to Oklahoma for the near weeklong event, others of us plan Super Bowl sized parties around this blessed event. Wherever you view the race however, it is the long over due open wheeled racing we need to get us through till April.

Not too much longer till real open wheeled sprint car racing though! The first part of February starts the season off in Florida…finally, its here! It may not be our local favorites, but surprisingly, there are several names that frequent Knoxville that trek down there to kick off their season. Some of we race fans even come up with a reason to be in Florida! A business trip perhaps, with a slight detour to Volusia Speedway!

And for those of us who just can’t take it any more, Daytona is just around the corner! Sundays with NASCAR return! There is a light at the end of the tunnel. April 19th is just around the bend- the count down can begin!
