(Bill W) 1978 was a year of firsts. It was the first year of the World of Outlaws. Their lone visit to Knoxville was during the Nationals. Shane Carson was a new driver. He teamed up with Bob Trostle, who dominated Knoxville the previous season with Doug Wolfgang. The new pairing nabbed the track title over John Stevenson on the strength of three wins. Yes, Wolfgang was still around most of the time, and racked up seven wins himself, including his second straight Nationals title.
