Can Anyone Beat Madsen and Johnson this Saturday?

Saturday, May 21, 2005
by Bill Wright - With Wayne Johnson’s victory last weekend, one question remains. Will someone dethrone Johnson or Kerry Madsen from 410 victory lane this Saturday night? For a scant $10 ($3 for children), you can join us this Saturday night for Wal-Mart night. Wal-Mart will be hosting some home cookin’ at the Dyer-Hudson Hall directly behind the raceway from 4-7 p.m. Beef burger and hot dog dinners will be on the menu with proceeds benefiting the Children’s Miracle Network. Popcorn and cotton candy will also be available. Come early to visit with and receive autographs from 360 driver and May 21 feature winner Johnny Anderson and 410 driver Ricky Logan. They'll be available from 4:00-5:30 p.m. Hot laps start at 6:45 p.m. with racing at approximately 8 p.m. The forecast looks great, so we’re expecting the car counts and action to be at a premium!

Both Johnson and Madsen have scored two feature wins in weekly action this year. Last week’s win was a narrow one over a persistent Matt Moro, who is coming on stronger every week in Gil Sonner’s 47. Madsen was third, while Brian Brown and Justin Henderson had strong runs to round out the top five.

Those who will threaten the “Dynamic Duo” this week will be Ricky Logan, who battled mechanical ills after scoring quick time. Logan had to drop from his heat race, went on to win the B main, and earned hard-charger honors by rocketing into the top ten. Madsen still leads the 410 race by a scant 70 points over Johnson. Logan sits third ahead of two-time champ, Skip Jackson and Brown. Moro, Don Droud Jr., Henderson, Calvin Landis and Chad Meyer, who has battled some tough feature race luck, round out the top ten.

Johnny Anderson found himself on top of the heap for the first time in the 360 feature last week. His strong run bested David Hall, who continues to impress. Running third after starting eighth was 2004 Wissota champion, Dustin Lindquist, from Floodwood, MN. The youngster was making his second ever visit to Knoxville and was putting it on the veterans, passing points leader, Larry Ball Jr. on two occasions. Look for Lindquist to make Knoxville his Saturday night home when it does not conflict with his USAC Silver Crown pavement races. This is a youngster on the rise!

2004 360 champ, Jake Peters, is rounding into form now. Two weeks in a row he has made a charge from the tail into the top five. His recent surges have vaulted him into fourth in the standings behind Ball, John Kearney and Anderson, with John Schulz fifth. Hall is running a solid sixth in the standings, and Joe Beaver, Brett Mather, Dusty Zomer (a 410 winner at Huset’s last Sunday) and Josh Higday round out the top ten. Don’t miss any of the action, we’ll see you Saturday!
