Raceway & Museum to be at Oskaloosa, Des Moines and Omaha Sports Shows

Friday, February 11, 2005
The Knoxville Raceway and the Knoxville-based National Sprint Car Museum have again teamed up to exhibit at three sports shows over the next three weekends in Oskaloosa, Des Moines and Omaha, respectively. The Oskaloosa show, February 12-13, is a motorsports show at Penn Central Mall, while the Des Moines show at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, February 16-20, and the Omaha show at the Qwest Center, February 24-27, are both outdoor sports shows.

According to museum executive director Tom Schmeh, “We are again pleased to be cross-promoting with the Knoxville Raceway in an effort to attract more patrons to both the dirt track and the non-profit museum. The sprint car weekly races, starting on April 23 and going through September 3, are our biggest ‘selling point’. Nowhere else in America can you see 70 winged sprint cars rocketing around a half-mile dirt track, two- and three-abreast, on a weekly basis for just ten dollars general admission! It is real value, as is the museum at just three dollars per person, and it is open seven days a week, year-round!”

The Des Moines Sports Show booth in the Varied Industries Building on the state fairgrounds will also involve the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce. The Omaha Sports Show booth in downtown Omaha will also involve the Knoxville and Pella Chambers of Commerce, the Marion County Development Commission and the Pella Historical Society. Those tourism-oriented organizations also cooperated on booths at sports shows in Kansas City, Chicago, and St. Louis recently. According to track director of racing Ralph Capitani, “The Marion County Fair Association realizes that it needs to be pro-active in marketing its events, including the midget car (June 3-4), winged 360-cubic-inch sprint car (August 4-5), winged 410 c.i. sprint car (August 10-13), and dirt late model stock car (September 29-30, October 1) ‘national championship’ shows.
