Knoxville Falls to Rain and Threatening Weather

Saturday, June 4, 2005
With city tornado sirens blaring and skies darkened by storm clouds, the Pepsi/Mt, Dew Midget Nationals and Knoxville 410 sprints events were canceled Saturday night shortly after 8:00 p.m. Track officials emptied the pit area and grandstand of people, having them go underneath both the front and back stretch grandstands. A brief shower followed and everyone was allowed to exit the fairgrounds, including the teams with their trailers.

The 410 sprints had completed their qualifying time trials and the first heat of the midgets had just fallen to the checkerd flags. At 9:00 p.m. Iowa time, weather forecasters were predicting violent weather to strike the Knoxville area. Director of Racing Ralph Capitani called the event off and told those in attendence to leave the fairgrounds as soon as possible.
