AMENDA & MCCARTY FIRST TO ENTER KNOXVILLE MASTERS CLASSIC

KNOXVILLE, IOWA (January 2, 2009) - The “Racin’ Reverand” Mark Amenda of Streator, Illinois, and racing veteran Dale McCarty of Eldorado Springs, Missouri, are the first two entrants for the 2009 version of the Knoxville Masters Classic winged 360-cubic-inch sprint car race for drivers age 50 and over. The seventeenth annual Knoxville Masters Classic will take place on Friday, May 29, at the legendary Knoxville Raceway and it will again pay a whopping $3,000 to win. Entry forms can be found on the track’s web site, www.knoxvilleraceway.com.

According to Knoxville’s director of racing Ralph Capitani, “I think people wonder what track personnel do during the off-season, not realizing that it takes a lot of planning to successfully stage 30-plus nights of racing per year. We are currently working hard on our five national championships events in 2009 for the midget cars, winged 360- and 410-cubic sprint cars, late model stock cars, and the non-winged sprint cars, respectively. Of course, we are also busy planning our weekly Lucas Oil Knoxville Championship Cup Series events and our special events, such as the World of Outlaws (WoO) shows, Masters Classic, and the twin Harris Clashes for International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) Modifieds and Deery Brothers Summer Series Late Models. We truly appreciate the support of drivers like Mark Amenda and Dale McCarty working with us in getting their paid entries in early for the 22-lapper on May 29 during the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame induction weekend.”

Knoxville Raceway will host an open track practice for the Masters Classic competitors on Thursday, May 28, from 7 until 9 p.m. The Knoxville Masters Classic & United States Auto Club (USAC) King Doodlebug Midget Classic will take place on Friday, May 29, starting at 6:45 p.m. The regular winged 410-cubic-inch sprinters will join the non-winged USAC midget cars for the Knoxville Midget Nationals on Saturday, May 30, also starting at 6:45 p.m.

Both nights of midget and sprint car racing will be sponsored by Pepsi and presented by Iowa Telecom.

Former winners of the Knoxville Masters Classic are as follows: Rick Ferkel (1993, ’94, ‘95), Billy Engelhart (1996, ’97), Jerry Crabb (1998), Roger Rager (1999, 2001, ’05), Terry Pletch (2000), Mike Peters (2002), Jimmy Sills (2003, ’04), Shane Carson (2006), A.J. Weaver (2007), and Randy Smith (2008).
